The Joy of the Lord

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).

By the time a man joins the Christian Care Center’s Men’s Residence, his spirit is crushed. Most of his relationships are broken, he has lost all sense of identity, feels like a failure, and the hope seems like something too far away to reach.

This is what drugs and alcohol does to one’s life. It feels as if one’s bones are just dried up. But when they are broken and poor in spirit is when God can really get to work in their lives. It’s when they are so deep in the valley that they look up to find God.

And God meets them where they are at and starts a work in their hearts. This is where God breathes life into their dry crushed bones bringing them from death to life… from the darkness of addiction to the light of His freedom through the cross of Jesus Christ.

But then what?

God then starts piecing their lives back together, restoring their families, giving them a new sense of identity, and bringing hope back into their reach. But these men don’t know how to live this new life. They don’t even know how to enjoy life without drugs and alcohol.

This is why it’s so important for us to be able to take these men on outings. They swam and ran and played with the same joy and laughter as children. They told me they couldn’t even remember the last time they had so much fun drug and alcohol free. I heard some say they couldn’t wait to take their kids here.

It’s the joy of the Lord that brings healing and restoration to these men’s lives. To watch these men come in crushed and then be brought to life with joy in their hearts is the reason why we do what we do at the Christian Care Center.
